Veeam Validator

Komodo-dragon.png

While working with the Veeam Application stack in the Komodo Cloud environment I stumbled across a utility that will validate the file level integrity of a backup set.  Why is this important one might ask?  Since the underlying file system where the backup files reside can be moved around, copied, mirrored, or even damaged, any modification to the file system can put your backup in an inconsistent state.

If you don’t have the means to implement a SureBackup verification job running the Veeam.Backup.Validator.exe can help verify the contents of the backup file and the validity of its contents.

The Veeam.Backup.Validator.exe is a command line utility that can run against the backup repositories locally or even over the network.  Veeam does mention that this utility will not validate backups on that are stored on a SOBR (Scale Out Backup Repository), although I would suspect this is since a SOBR can be made up of multiple disks, as long as the backup set is contained on a single disk in the SOBR the utility can verify backup files.

Once the Veeam.Backup.Validator.exe has completed its operations a nice HTML or XML report can be produced that will give a breakdown of the backups in the backup file.

Since this utility is command line driven, I decided to write a visual front end to the utility to help with execution of the validation.
